Hypertension is defined as the pressure exerted by the column of blood on the wall of arteries. Hypertension is a lifestyle disorder commonly encountered in clinical practice. 
Hypertension is one of the major causes of disability and death all over the world. Hypertension causes heart attacks, strokes, kidney failures and other disorder if it is neglected and remains untreated. 
In many cases, hypertension does not cause any symptoms until it causes complications such as heart attack and stroke and plays a role of silent killer in the body. 
So it is important to realize that you may have high blood pressure and only way to find it out is to get your blood pressure checked at regular intervals.
Hypertension is a major risk factor for the development of coronary artery disease, stroke, congestive heart failure and renal disorders. In Ayurveda there is no description of such a single disease which can resemble with hypertension. 
As per Ayurveda due to less prevalence of disease and its asymptomatic nature disease is not described as it is Charak has described the syndrome of Raktashrayaja Vyadhi which covers the hypertension and its symptoms like Mada, Moorchha, Sanyasa
Causes of uccha-raktachap
• Heavy, unctuous and cold food beverages (Guru, Sheeta, Atisnigdh) 
• Execessive eating and mixing many things without proper planning (Atimatra sama bhojana)
• Dietetics causing excessive acid production -Vidahi Annapana - Dadhi, Amla Mastu, Shuktam 
• Wine and other fermented items (Sura, Sauveera)
• Incompatible diets (Viruddha Bhojan)
• Day sleep after taking food (Bhuktva Divasvapan)
• Absence of physical activity (Avyayam, )
• Excessive use of fatty diet (Medyanam, Atibhakshanat)
• Tension, worries - Chinta Fear - Bhaya Grief - Shoka Anger – Krodha.
Causes of hypertension:
• Stress and hectic life-style.
• Smoking and an excessive intake of intoxicants .
• Obesity.
• Metabolic disorders.
• Excessive intake of common table salt.
• Overloading of fast foods.
• Hardening of the arteries
Sign & symptoms of high blood pressure: Asymptomatic - 50% patients remain asymptomatic which are difficult to diagnose.
• Headache, burning sensation.
• Talkativeness, excessive anger.
• Giddiness/Vertigo, Tinnitus.
• Epistaxis(bleeding from nose), hematuria.
• Chest pain.
• Palpitation, execessive perspiration etc.
• Vision disturbances.
• Easy fatigability, Drowsiness, trembling
Untreated hypertension can result in: Arteriosclerosis, Kidney damage, Heart Attack, Stroke, Enlarged heart, Blindness, Parkinsons Disease
Do’s in high blood pressure:
• Plan your Ahara (Diet) and Vihara (Lifestyle) as per the advice of ayurvedic physician.
• Maintain your daily routine, diet schedule diary and discuss with physician.
• Increase physical activity level.
• De-stress – Yoga, spiritual and psychological regimes
• Learn time management and keep some time daily for your self
Don’t’s in high blood pressure
• Avoid smoking. 
• Over eating.
• Eating of heavy unctuous diet.
• Day sleep. 
• Engaging in over ambitious projects. 
• Hyper reactiveness.
Diet for hypertension:
• A lower sodium level – Pickles, Papad, Chutney(Avoid).
• Use fresh poultry, fish and lean meat, rather than canned or processed.
• Avoid less salt or low Sodium Salt.
• Avoid red meat.
• Oils :Omega-3 fatty acids, such as those found in fish oil, have a significant impact on blood pressure. Sesame (tila), Mustard oil, Soyabeen oil, olive oil Almonds.
• Coconut water is rich in potassium, electrolytes, and other important nutrients, coconut water has been shown to help significantly lower blood pressure levels in most of the people who drink it. Magnesium plays an important role in reducing Blood Pressure levels. 
• Vitamin C is the key to reducing blood pressure. 
• Cayenne Pepper (Red Chilli Powder) is probably the fastest way to lower High blood pressure. Mix one teaspoon of Red Chilli Powder with half a cup of lukewarm water or mix two tablespoons of raw organic honey with two teaspoons of Red Chilli Powder ; boil them with 250 ml of water and drink when it is warm.
• Hawthorne Berries (CRATAEGUS OXYACANTHA) have rightly been called "food for the heart". They lower blood pressure, as well as protect arterial walls and prevent and treat hypertension and angina.
• Garlic contains allicin, a substance which has antibacterial, antioxidant, lipid lowering and anti-hypertension properties. Studies have proven that garlic significantly lowers both systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Crush two clove of garlic in a glass of hot milk.(Lasuna Ksheera paka) For high blood pressure, take two clove of garlic each morning.
Preventive lifestyle modifcation
• Regular physical activity can help lower your blood pressure and keep your weight under control. Strive for at least 30 minutes of physical activity a day. Use stairs instead of elevator, get off bus 2 stops early, Park your car at the far end of the lot and walk! Yoga exercise daily for at least half an hour
• In obese person - Losing even 2.3 kilograms can lower blood pressure.
• In healthy also, alcohol can raise blood pressure. If you choose to drink alcohol, do so in moderation — up to one drink a day for women and everyone older than age 65, and two drinks a day for men. As much as you can avoid alcohol
• Tobacco injures blood vessel walls and speeds up the process of hardening of the arteries
• Reduce stress as much as possible. 
• Practice healthy coping techniques, such as muscle relaxation and deep breathing. 
• Getting plenty of sleep can help, too
• Home blood pressure monitoring can help you keep closer tabs on your blood pressure, show if medication is working, and even alert you and your doctor to potential complications.
• Pranayama & Yoga – Sheetali, Sheetakari, Bhramari helps in reducing HTN, Meditation – Padmasana, Vajrasana, Sukhasana. Relaxing in Shavasana, Practice taking deep, slow breaths to help relax.

I) Abhyanga (Massage) – Sarvanga Abhangya with specially for- mulated oils helps to increase elasticity and flexibility. It correct and enhance the blood flow in healthy manners. 
II) Vaman and Virechan (Emesis and Purgative Therapy) – If the patient is having Uttam Bala and having mild or moderate type of hypertension without any other complications then Shodhana procedures like Vaman, Virechan can be advised according to Dosha Pradhanya. 
III) Basti (Medicated Enema): – Basti therapy is specially designed for the Vata disorders. It is also called as Ardha Chikitsa by Acharyas. According to Dosha Dushti and Roga Bala(Patient Strength); Karma, Kala or Yoga Basti can be advocated
