Veteran film, stage and television actress Reema Lagoo died following a cardiac arrest early on Thursday morning.
The 59-year-old artiste breathed her last at the Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Andheri west, where she was rushed shortly after midnight. Divorced from her former husband, she is survived by her daughter, Mrunmayee Lagoo.
Starting her career as a schoolgirl in Pune, Reema soon graduated to larger roles on Marathi stage and films.
Later, Reema became famous for portraying the “middle-aged, modern, but understanding mother” on both, the silver and the small screens, to some of the biggest stars in the industry.
Reema was noted for her roles in several blockbusters like “Hum Aapke Hain Kaun”, “Aashiqui”, “Kuch Kuch Hota Hai”, “Hum Saath Saath Hain”, “Maine Pyar Kiya”, “Kal Ho Na Ho”, “Vastaav”, “Saajan”, “Rangeela” and “Kya Kehna”, etc.
On television, she was seen in prominent roles in “Khandaan”, “Shrimaan Shrimati”, “Tu Tu, Main Main,” “Do Aur Do Paanch”, and ongoing serial on StarPlus, Mahesh Bhatt’s “Naamkaran.”
In Marathi, she gave notable performances in “Ghar Tighanche Have”, “Chal Aatap Lavkar”, “Jhale Mokle Aakash” and “Vitho Rakhumai”, etc.
Her cremation took place on Thursday afternoon in the presence of her family members as well as celebrities like Rishi Kapoor, Kajol, Tanvi Azmi, Shreyas Talpade, Rakesh Bedi, Raza Murad, Anang Desai, Sulabha Arya and Ashoke Pandit. Before the last rites, actor Aamir Khan and his wife, besides filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt, visited Reema’s house.
Aamir said on an emotional note: “We are all in shock. She had no problems that we knew of. It happened suddenly and is saddening. My first film was with Reema ji ‘Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak’. She was a fabulous actor and her heart was so clean. She was also very socially conscious. We only pray that she rests in peace.”
Here is what the celebrities had to say:
Boman Irani: “Our very dear Reema Lagoo is no more. Always kind, funny and loving. Saddened. RIP”
“You will always be loved and remembered in the best ways with your wonderful smile,” tweeted Kajol, who played her daughter in “Kuch Kuch Hota Hai”.

“I just wish I get new ideas and ways to entertain people. One tends to get bored if one keeps on doing the same thing. I will keep on coming out with some different show or different film.” Kapil became everyone’s favourite with his comical gigs with “Comedy Nights with Kapil”, but the good run ended after a violent fight with co-actor Sunil Grover on a flight made headlines.
What ensued was talk about his drinking habits, about his newly acquired high-handedness and making his guests wait for long hours -- all
