If you were born in the 1980s with abundant talents, you can still prove that it is not very difficult to catch forward or rather to catch backward in time with the 1960s and 1970s.
This is what exactly 32 year-old A. Lanunungsang Lemtor or fondly called Lanu by friends and admirers, is doing – reinventing the 1980s amplified genre of music with a touch of the 1960s and 1970s.
Lanu who teaches music in Noida School of Rock, Noida opines that being born in the 1980s, as a baby he must have grown up plugged in or tuned to the contemporary world music of the same period be it rock, blues, country, jazz, folk or pop.
Hence, the natural free flow of Lanu’s musical internalization can be best heard in his latest album “ALN LEMTOR/Flash back collections”.
Though recorded with session musicians backing up the talented guitarist, Lanu’s trademark sound can be well assessed in all his seven diligently packed numbers.
One can feel that Lanu has indeed spewed the 1980s sound with a new rigour – all evident in his current work. Numbers to be swallowed with a musical pinch of salt and pepper include Rough Road, Sacrifice, Jazz Link and Sometime with Jesus.
Lanu says “Laboratory”, one of the seven numbers in the album is dedicated to his father -- late M. Among Lemtor, Mupongchuket village in Mokokchung district and Lanu says the composition sounds like his father’s old top record player.
Born on June 20, 1980, Lemtor honed his musical skills surrounded by sounds emanating from within his home. He claims that he is also the proud inheritor of his father’s cassette tape collections.
“The many different genres of family audio collections passed on from father to son. Ranging from early 60’s to 80’s, I have a huge collection of audio cassettes even now in an era of CDs and memory cards”, says Lanu.
As a music teacher at Noida, the national capital region, Lanu is making fervent attempts to convince young music students to listen to some of the “real music of the old school” besides creating new sounds for a creative world.
Lanu’s latest album would be available at Crescendo, Notun Basti at Rs. 100.
