Manipur joins observation of 29th International Candle Light Memorial

Rich floral tributes were paid to the people who were victims of HIV and AIDS on Sunday, on the occasion of the observation of the 29th International Candle Light Memorial.

The day was observed on the theme “Promoting Health and Dignity”. The theme aims to raise awareness around HIV and to promote respect for the human rights of people living with HIV.

Manipur ranked third with regard to the total number of HIV positive cases next to Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu states of the country. The disease became a major public health problem in the state since 1990.

Out of total 75,322 blood sample screened 14,751 found positive till March 2005 in Manipur. For the first time in India, the Manipur AIDS policy was implemented in the state.

A total of 2,019 people found positive with HIV while screening was conducted to 6,854 blood sample in 2004. Out of 1,745 blood sample screen during 2005, 515 were found positive. Till 2005, 14 people have died of the disease, according to the MACS report.

Among the districts of Manipur, Ukhrul had the highest zero-positive rate (HIV positive case) followed by Chandel and Churachandpur district. The rates were recorded as 43.86 percent, 34.51 percent and 33.01 percent respectively as on march 31, 2005.
