Manipur police have arrested three international arm smugglers along with arms allegedly smuggled from neighbouring Myanmar.
Two AK-47 rifles and two magazines were found concealed in a Tata Sumo (MN-04A 5711), police said Sunday.
The three alleged arm smugglers were identified as Jamgoulun Khongsai (28) son of Jamtong Khongsai of Aihang village of Chandel district, Letkhogin Mate (25) son of Ngamjahem Mate of Moreh Ward No. 3 (Tengnoupal district) and Khupkhanthang Ngaite (21) son of Bungzalian Ngaite of Tonjang village of Churachandpur’s Singhat sub-division.
They were arrested along with the arms Saturday afternoon, around 4 pm from Pallel along the Imphal-Moreh section of NH-102 after a brief chase, police said. They were intercepted by a team of Thoubal district police who intensified their frisking and checking duty along the stretch of the highway based on specific information.
Thoubal district police SP said that teams of police commandos attached with the district police swung into action after receiving information of smuggling sophisticated arms from Myanmar to Churachandpur via NH-102. When the police commandos intercepted and checked the Tata Sumo, two AK-47 rifles with magazines were found concealed underneath the spare tyre.
Four mobile handsets and six SIM cards were also seized from their possession, the senior police officer added.
The consignment was to be handed over to a man in Churachandpur district of Manipur, said police.
The three arrested were engaged in the arm smuggle from Myanmar for the last few years, the SP added.
