Zeliangrong Union (Assam, Manipur and Nagaland) Wednesday strongly denounced United Naga Council (UNC)’s “unilateral” decision to boycott Manipur Congress party leader and former deputy chief minister Gaikhangam in “Naga areas”.
UNC, on November 30 last, announced to boycott former deputy chief minister and representing Nungba Assembly Constituency as a Congress MLA by accusing him of campaigning against the Naga political issue when he himself was a Naga.
Addressing media persons at ZU office in Imphal, ZU president Amu Kamei alleged that UNC had not discussed the matter of boycotting Gaikhangam with the Zeliangrong people.
And, therefore, “We, the Zeliangrong people will not agree when UNC announced the boycott a person belonging to Zeliangrong community without consulting us,” he said.
“Before taking the decision atleast UNC should consult with the concern community and give a clear cut statement regarding the boycott,” Amu added.
Zeliangrong people did not boycott Gaikhangam and he will be free to move any area in Assam, Manipur, and Nagaland inhabited by Zeliangrong community.
Coming to framework agreement which India government signed with NSCN(I-M), the ZU president said that it was not a matter of a particular community or a state, but a national issue dealing with the Parliament.
The president further asked question why UNC singled out only Gakihangam and what about other Congress leaders and other who were raising voice against the framework agreement.
Boycotting only an individual was not acceptable to the Zeliangrong people and ZU, he added.
