Indian premier off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin is breaking records with each passing series. The Chennai offie, who recently became the fastest bowler to reach 250 Test wickets, is a major threat for the Australian batting line-up in the upcoming four-match series.
Former Australian skipper Steve Waugh, widely regarded as one of the finest leaders of the game, hailed Ashwin as the ‘Bradman of bowling’ recently. The Aussie legend had once given the title to Sri Lankan legend Muttiah Muralitharan.
While Murali remains to be the highest wicket taker in Tests with 800 scalps, Ashwin said that he would not like to pick one more wicket than Anil Kumble, who ended up taking 619 wickets in the five-day format.
When asked whether he would like to emulate Murali, Ashwin told The Deccan Chronicle, “In reality, that’s not something I am looking at. It’s a massive achievement to go anywhere near Murali’s tally of 800 wickets. If I get there, it would be like surpassing my human limit. I started playing Tests a bit late and I have always fought against the odds. And, I don’t think I would want to extend one wicket more than what Anil Kumble (619) achieved. That’s a matter of honour.”
Ashwin remains to be one of the best bowlers in world cricket keeping in mind his ability to flummox the best batsmen in the opposition.
In the upcoming series against Australia, fans are looking forward to the Ashwin vs Warner contest. If Ashwin has wreaked havoc in the last one year, Warner too, is undeniably the most formidable left-hander across formats.
The swashbuckling right-hander, who is wary of Ashwin’s form said that he has a plan in mind to tackle his variation.
“I have to respect a player like Ashwin. He thinks like a batsman and I have to be disciplined against him. I have a game plan for him - I have to bat against his strength.
He is going to be ready for me and we both have to adopt to the situation. It’s going to be a great battle for the both of us. I have to bide my time,” Warner recently told ‘India Today’.
