Girls of Porbami Pfütsero celebrated ‘Khukhu’ day coinciding with Independence Day. The feast began with a blessing pronounced by Rev H. Chiero followed by sharing the significance of ‘Khukhu’ by elders, traditional games and enjoyment of food with various necessary ingredients throughout the day.

The programme was organized by Porbami Women Pfütsero Town to inculcate the meaning and significance of ‘Khukhu’ to upcoming womenfolk since many villages “mingled in marriage”.

According to Porbami Women Pfütsero town, general secretary, Niesuhlu Sakhamo, the main significance of ‘Khukhu’ was to set aside the day specially for young girls and spinsters to sanctify themselves and learn the identity of girlhood, they are loaded with domestic chores and hardly have leisure time in a male dominated community.

Therefore, the festival has been dedicated to young girls to feast with various delicacies to their contentment without worrying about household chores for the day and is considered the one and only “free or no working day” for girls.

The mandatory food items during the event include- crab, beef hide (cow skin), kholar beans (kurhi) and bamboo shoot besides variety of local delicacies.
Around 300 girls and women attended the ‘Khukhu’ day. The ‘Khukhu’ is normally celebrated in the second or third week of August every year.
