Former Nagaland Chief Minister and former Governor of Goa and Maharashtra addressing the media about the need of greater involvement of Naga society in the talks process in Guwahati on Thursday. (EP)
One of the senior most leaders of the Congress party and former chief minister, Nagaland and former Maharashtra governor, Dr. S C Jamir on Thursday called for a change in approach on part of the Centre in respect of Naga peace talks.
He said involvement of the NSCN (I-M); led by Th. Muivah and Isak Swu alone in the peace talks would not solve the problem.
Interacting with media at Guwahati, Jamir said from now onwards the peace-talks should be “all inclusive” involving Naga people as a whole given that the Centre has already rejected the two principal demands of the NSCN (I-M)– sovereignty and integration of Naga inhabited areas in the North East.
He termed the NSCN (I-M)’s demand for sovereignty unrealistic in the present context. He said all other Naga rebel factions– NSCN (K), two faction of Naga National Council (NNC) led by Adinno and Shingnyu– leaders from civil society, leaders of tribes and political leaders should be involved in the Naga peace-talks from now onwards. The 80-year-old leader said that he was ready to play any role to find solution to the vexed problem.

Dr. SC Jamir is the most respectful person and his sentiments always reflects the welfare of Naga Society. I am not a Naga but I am born in Nagaland, so its heart touching when we speak of Naga Peace and when we tolorate different factions are welcoming arms and ammunition in the state. Because this will never encourage peace rather it will encourage only violence and hatred. Our sentiments should think of increasing education , tourism business, and should welcome different companies without any policy of paying extra tax to any faction party. This will directly reflect the welfare of Naga Society. Lover of Naga Ajoy Chakraborty

Dr SC Jamir has aired the ''popular'' sentiments of the Nagas at large. He is modern, pragmatic, a visionary and a true well-wisher of Naga society.May wisdom dawn on the Naga Hoho and the ENPO to initiate a round table meeting of all those who matter. In fitness of things the factions should give way to the Naga elders who should now be at the helm for a more inclusive approach in finding solution to the elusive peace and progress. Friends of the Nagas wish all the best. Prakash Bhatt
