Pastor Rev. Tsolie Chase, the present pastor of Baptist Church Khonoma whose whole life had been entirely dedicated to the ministry of God is now an old man of 80 plus years. However his chronological age does not hinder his accommodative personality. He is ready to mingle with any person. His sense of humor and practical joke befriends both young and old alike. The wrinkles on his face, the grey hair he wears does not determine an ageing man – but an unwavering spirit, an exemplary life he had led, the consistent faith he exhibits are some traits that is seen by many fellow Christians.
He served as the first full time treasurer of Nagaland Baptist Church Council (NBCC) 1993 – 1998 and pastor, Baptist Church Khonoma, (BCK) 1998 – till date. He also served as president Angami Baptist Church Council (ABCC), worked as an executive member Ura Academy and had served as a peace missionary during the Indo – Naga conflict.
As a veritable person he had served in numerous organizations, and it was during this time that he got the idea of scaling the highest peak (Mt. Saramati) in Nagaland when he attained 80 years. One among the oldest, longest serving pastor in Nagaland and also could be among the octogenarian to climb Mt. Saramati, Rev Chase has nothing ostentatious of any worldly recognition or physical strength or determination not to nail any record but to show God’s gracefulness upon him.
Mt. Saramati is at a formidable elevation of 3,862m located in Kiphire district near Thanamir Village, Nagaland. It was on the morning of April 24, 2017, Rev. Tsolie Chase along with nine other participants (all BCK youth members) started on his long time dream. The team left Khonoma as early as 5 a.m, where after a whole 15 hours drive till Thanamir the team reached the motorable end. The team halted that night at NBCC guest house Thanamir. On the following morning the trekkers had to scale for 9 to 10 hours to reach the zenith point of Mt. Saramati and to reverse the same with more or less the same timing. Many local inhabitants were worried at the sight of aged man attempting to make the climb. They were apprehensive as it may cause inconvenience and also told the team about the unpredictable weather as it was drizzling and thick cloud engulfed the atmosphere. However, Rev. Tsolie Chase was not to be discouraged, instead he encouraged the other participants to reach the zenith point whatever the situation, if not blocked by a landslide.
The team had to manoeuvre 22 lofty hills to reach the peak. The crooked and the narrow path covered by Glouthera Fragmatisms bushes, multicolor Rhododendron trees. The glittering grey rocks enthralled the weakening climbers. It appeared like all beauties were perfectly poised in unison with God. On reaching the top, a mild wind swept the clouds away so that the climbers all got a glimpse of the glory of Gods’ work. The contour and lofty curves on the precipices of the Burmese land could not be missed. It was as if the entire astounding God’s work was covered by the thick blanket of cloud. The team marvelled at the timely wind which cleared the view. On reaching the top, Rev requested the youth members to accompany him with the Hymn “How Great Thou Art”. The participant youths sang candidly in unison even as it echoed around and blended melodiously at the surrounding beauty of Mt. Saramati. The Hymn was sang and the Hymn had said it all.
