In a boost to the Congress fighting to retain the two parliamentary seats in Manipur, four parties working under an alliance -Secular Democratic Front (SDF) - announced support to Congress candidates in the ensuing Lok Sabha elections.

While announcing the support, leaders of the parties vowed to root out BJP from Manipur and also to prevent BJP from coming to power at the Centre again after the ensuing elections.

The four parties were Manipur units of Janata Dal (Secular), Democratic Janata Party, Samajwadi Party and Manipur Pradesh Trinamool Congress.

Addressing a press conference at Imphal Congress Bhavan, JD(S) state unit president, Manihar Goshami who is also chairman of SDF said that the four parties will extend their supports to Congress candidates in the ensuing Lok Sabha polls in Manipur.

Besides the presidents of the four parties, MPCC president Gaikhangam, former chief minister O Ibobi Singh and other leaders of the state Congress attended the press conference.

The main objective of supporting the Congress candidates was to root out the BJP from the soil of Manipur as well as to prevent the saffron party from coming to power again at the Centre.

“We extend our support to Congress candidates to save democracy and India’s integrity,” Goshami declared.

He alleged that democracy and integrity of India has been put at stake since the BJP-led NDA government came to power at the Centre.

According to the SDF chairman, only the Congress can save democracy from the hands of the BJP.

The voting for the two parliamentary constituencies in Manipur will take place on April 11 (for the Outer Manipur (ST) Parliamentary Constituency) and on April 18 (for Inner Manipur PC).

Congress is fielding its nominees in both the seats which the party is occupying for the last two terms which multi-corner fight is in the offing.

A total of eight candidates are in the fray in the Outer PC while 11 in the Inner PC.

Among parties fielding their nominees, the ruling BJP has been heavily engaging electioneering of party candidates to snatch both the parliamentary seats from the Congress.

After flagging off the vans, Singh said that the vans will create awareness to the people about the achievements of the BJP-led NDA rule at the Centre during its five years tenure as well as two years rule of BJP-led coalition government in the state.
