Governor PB Acharya and chief minister Neiphiu Rio extended warm greetings and best wishes to all members of the Indian armed forces, ex-servicemen and their families on the occasion of the Armed Forces Flag Day on Friday.

In a message, the governor said Armed Forces Flag Day was observed in recognition of services rendered by the armed forces personnel in defence of the motherland and to convey solidarity. He explained that the day was intended to honour martyrs, salute veterans and the brave, and enhance the traditional bond that existed between citizens of the country and the armed forces.

The day is celebrated to enlist public cooperation and support for three basic purposes – rehabilitation of families of battle casualties, welfare of servicing personnel and their families and resettlement and welfare of ex-servicemen and their families, he added.

Acharya appealed to all citizens to contribute generously towards the Armed Forces Flag Day Fund, which, he added, would go a long way in supplementing the efforts of the government for welfare of war widows, disabled soldiers, ex-servicemen and serving soldiers, who have been safeguarding the nation from external aggression and come to the aid of civil authority at the time of natural calamities and disasters.

He wished the Armed Forces Flag Day observation every success.

Meanwhile, in a separate message, Rio too extended warm greetings and best wishes to all ranks of the Army, Navy, Air Force, ex-servicemen, their families and widows on the occasion of the Armed Forces Flag Day.

He said on this day, citizens and voluntary organisations collect donation in exchange of token flags and car stickers throughout the country, adding that the token flags in red, navy blue and light blue colours representing the three services, are distributed to the public.

Explaining that the fund so collected was meant for the noble cause of rehabilitation of war widows, disabled soldiers, ex-servicemen and their families, the chief minister appealed to all citizens to contribute generously towards the noble cause.

He too wished the day a grand success.
