Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment is expected to fund Rs. 300 crore for the Meghalaya government to construct stadiums for hosting the 2022 National Games, deputy chief minister Prestone Tynsong said on Tuesday.

Meghalaya will be hosting the National Games 2022 coinciding with the 50th year of the creation of the state.

“For creating the stadiums, the Union ministry of social justice and empowerment is funding the state Rs 300 crore, and for building the games village, the fund has to be managed by the state government,” Tynsong told journalists after the cabinet meeting.

The cabinet, chaired by chief minister Conrad Sangma, discussed at length the state’s preparations for hosting the national games. The sports department had also briefed the cabinet about getting a fund of Rs 300 crore from the Union ministry of social justice and empowerment.

Tynsong said the cabinet found that preparations for hosting the national games were satisfactory.

“Land about 50 acres will be utilised for creating stadiums for the national games at the New Shillong Township while another land area of about 70 acres will be also utilized for building the games village,” Tynsong said.

Moreover, Prestone Tynsong reported that the sports department will also complete the process of engaging consultants, architects, and chief executive officers for the national games by November 15.

Asked if the sports infrastructure would be completed in time, with only four years left for the national games, the deputy chief minister voiced confidence saying, “the state government is determined to complete all required infrastructure within 2022.”

Nita Ambani, founder-chairperson of Reliance Foundation, had voiced her keen interest to partner with Meghalaya government in building sports infrastructure ahead of the National Games.

“We would love to talk to the government and help in every way possible for the national games,’Ambani had said recently in Shillong.

Meghalaya will be the third North Eastern state after Manipur and Assam hosted the National Games in 1999 and 2007, respectively.

It had co-hosted the 2016 South Asian Games with neighbouring Assam.

An estimated 14,450 athletes and officials are expected to visit Meghalaya during the Games.
