Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address an election rally in Manipur on April 7, state BJP source said on Monday.

Modi will address a party election rally to be held in Imphal’s Hapta Kangjeibung.

This will be Modi’s second visit to the state ahead of the Lok Sabha election. He had earlier visited the state on January 4.

Meanwhile, a police source said that security measures have been stepped up in the state, particularly in the twin capital districts in view of the schedule visit of the VVIP.

The source, however, maintained that they were yet to receive official intimation from the PMO regarding the visit even though they have started the preparation.

Manipur has two Lok Sabha seats - Inner Manipur and

Outer Manipur. The voting for the Outer Manipur (ST) seat will be

held on April 11 and Inner Manipur on April 18 respectively.

The ruling BJP in Manipur is eyeing both the Lok Sabha seats from Manipur, which is currently held by Congress.

A total of 19,59,429 voters are expected to use their franchise to elect two MPs from the state.

Altogether 19 candidates (8 in the Outer parliamentary constituency and 11 in the Inner parliamentary constituency) are in the fray.

The party is fielding Houlim Shokhopao Mate alias Benjamin in the Outer ST reserved parliamentary constituency and Dr RK Ranjan in the Inner parliamentary constituency. Ranjan had earlier contested the election from the same parliamentary constituency while Benjamin is a new entrant.

Even as it was a multi-corner contest, the ruling BJP considered Congress, the party holding both the seats for the last two Lok Sabha terms, as their main contender.

National and state leaders of the party have been heavily engaged in wooing the voters to snatch both the seats from the Congress, by fielding new faces.
