Tensions flared at Manipur University campus once again on Wednesday after police raided students hostels inside the campus following a confrontation.

Additional police forces has been detailed inside the varsity campus.

Police raided the hostels after dispersing a group of college students who tried to storm the administrative block of the university.

A group of students from AMSU, MSF, DESAM, SUK, KSA and AIMS tried to meet the VC in-charge prof Yugindro and press him to take up necessary steps to secure the unconditional release of arrested students and teachers who were in jail.

However, police prevented them from entering the administrative block.

The students tried to enter the block forcibly despite strong resistance which compelled the police to fire tear gas shells to disperse the agitating students.

No injury to either side was reported. However, police picked up as many as 13 students taking part in the protest.

Shortly after the confrontation, police raided the hostels and reportedly picked up more students allegedly involved in the confrontation. Meanwhile, teachers of the university took mass casual leave, registering strong protest.

An emergency meeting of the MUTA convened in the evening also strongly condemned the police action against the students staging “democratic” form of agitation. They demanded unconditional release of the students picked up by the police.
