Probe vendetta

For many decades, the central agencies such as Income Tax, Enforcement Directorate and CBI have been misused by the powers that be for political witch hunt but in the past, the raids and arrests though at times arbitrary, were few and far between. However, after the Modi government came to power, the series of raids and summons from these agencies appear to have hit the roof. It must be however acknowledged, that raids or summons even if they appear to be instances of harassments, do not mean they are without basis. The series of raids and summons by central agencies or the agencies directly under the control of the government of the day, have raised serious questions on whether political vendetta has taken a new turn? The objective of the raids are supposed to be based on independent decisions that are taken after considering the hard evidence. Also, the law is not supposed to differentiate between those in power and those out or of without power. If there are corrupt to be probed, it should be across the political spectrum. In the present scenario, the Modi government has indicated a very strong determination to politically finish off the Congress in line with its vow for ‘Congress mukth Bharat’or India without Congress. The recent extradition of Augusta Westland Helicopter scam agent Christen Michel from the UAE by the CBI is noteworthy. It matters little whether Sonia Gandhi or any other Gandhi or Congress leader(s) are involved. What matters is that in view of the determined effort to nab the main middleman in the alleged scam, the Modi government has shown its resolv, never mind that it did not exhibit the same determination in the case with Lalit Modi, Nirav Modi, Vijay Mallaya and Sanjeev Chawla. Interestingly, a majority of the probes are directed against the Congress. There is an I-T probe against Sonia Gandhi, Rahul underway in National Herald case. Another probe involves former t Himachal Pradesh CM Virbhadra Singh and the age-old probe and recent raids against Lalu Prasad Yadav family, which came after BJP split the Yadav-Kumar coalition in Bihar. There are also independent probes by ED and Haryana Police against Sonia’s son-in-law Robert Vadra in DLF and other land case. The CBI and Enforcement Directorate are probing multiple cases against former union finance minister Chidambaram and his son Karti Chidamabaram. There are multiple cases against Aam Aadmi Party leaders including Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. Trinamool Congress leaders including Sudip Bandopadhyay were arrested by the CBI in connection with a chit fund scam. There is a CBI probe against former Uttarakhand Chief Minister Harish Rawat for offering bribes to rebel Congress MLAs to support him during the floor test in April last year. Former Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda is facing probe in Gurgaon land allotment case. Another former Chief Minister and BSP president Mayawati is being probe by the CBI in multi-crore National Rural Health Mission Scam. The CBI is also probing a corruption case against former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah. The opposition has countered by demanding probe on the Vyapam scam in MP, Rafale scam, the Panama Papers link with the son of a chief minister and the links between Lalit Modi and some leaders of the BJP. It is unfortunate that offences are being politicised and the probe agencies have become mere pawns in the game.
