To all mothers

Every year, people across the globe celebrate Mother’s Day on second Sunday of May to acknowledge and encourage mothers for the crucial role they play in every society. Honouring mothers is a command in the Bible - ‘Honour your father and your mother’ (Exodus 20:12) and ‘Every person must respect his mother and his father’ (Leviticus 19:3). Honouring fathers and mothers brings blessings from God. Motherhood was established by God as a part of His perfect plan for humanity. Motherhood is a divine intention from the beginning of time. Even those who are not biologically mothers, have exhibited the best examples of Godly love such as Saint Teresa (earlier Mother Teresa) and many who may not have received attention. In Proverbs 31, God inspired the wise man, Solomon, to describe the distinctive qualities of a good help mate and mother. There are two kinds of mothers- good mothers and godly mothers. A good mother is popular with her children, family and friends. A good mother who does not know God is vulnerable and is like a house built upon a sand. A good mother does her duty but a godly mother does more than tend to her family. A godly mother is an asset for her family and society. In a world where the dividing line between what is good and what is bad is relative and thinning, families need godly mothers. Mothers inculcate godliness to their children and are instrumental in leading their husbands to God. Proverbs 31 describes the worth of a godly Mother, whose virtues are priced far above rubies. The praise and success that she brought to her own family and community will be her best eulogy. Though both fathers and mothers equally share the responsibility of making a home, mothers play a prominent role in the development of spiritual values in the family. A virtuous women is strong in spirit as she waits on God for wisdom and strength and by her spirit, she can influence her children and husband. On the other hand, an ungodly mother also loves her children and husband but places greatest value on material happiness, allows her children to do what they like, does not hold herself accountable, is clever with words and economic with truth and prone to compromises, loves to hangout with others instead of being at home with the family, thinks and acts like a single woman, loves to spend, is under the influence of the environment, prone to loose talks, has a careless attitude, is vainly pompous, craves for fun etc. The Bible tells of ungodly women or mothers who are licentious (lack moral and restraint), deceivable (like Eve who lacked spiritual fortitude), materialistic (like Lot’s wife), contentious (openly disrespects the husband like Michal wife of David), corrupt (like Jezebel), discouraging (like Job’s wife), manipulative (like Herodias) and deceitful (like Sapphira). These few women among many in the Bible have only brought ruin upon themselves and their families. Ungodliness in contemporary society has created rebelliousness and destroyed family values. On Mother’s Day, society needs to remind itself not only to honour mothers but also to remind and encourage them of their everyday roles for a hopeful future.
