1 convicted for extortion at Longleng

One person has been sentenced to nine months imprisonment in connection with attempt to commit extortion by serving an extortion letter to the contractor of the road construction company between Tamlu and Merangkong.
Informing this in a press note, Assistant Public Prosecutor Longleng H. Donyei Phom said that the accused Phonglang Konyak, a member of the NSCN/GPRN (K), was convicted under Section 358 of the IPC. The accused had demanded Rs. 2,50,000 from the construction firm.
Donyie said ‘extortion’ has been a significant reason for slow progress of the construction of the highways.
The case was investigated by a special investigation team constituting six members. The prosecution examined nine witnesses to prove the case and the prosecution was led by Donyei Phom.
