1 dead; 3 missing as flash flood hit Meluri

Body of woman, who was among the four persons reported to have been washed away in the flash flood caused by heavy rain at Jiji/Thechii river under Meluri sub-division on May 30, was retrieved on Wednesday.
The woman has been identified as, Nyuhietshü (37) and her body retrieved at Zathsü, around 25 km from Jiji/Thechii river, OC Meluri informed Nagaland Post. Search and rescue operation is underway to find the body of the three remaining persons including two females- Shesuthe (70) and Rothothsu (45), and Eyelo Wezah.
They were sleeping in their hut, when sudden flood water washed away their paddy fields at around 12:30 am. Paddy fields of Meluri village and Jassami village (Manipur) were also swept away and one person identified as Tetso Jijiru, who was working in the field sustained injures. He was rushed to Meluri Hospital for emergency treatment.
ADC Meluri, Dr.Tinojongshi Chang told this Correspondent, that search and rescue operation was currently underway along the stretch of the river.
The rescue team comprises of district administration, SDRF personnel from Phek, 22 AR from Meluri and Jessami, 111 BSF personnel stationed at Akash Bridge, well wishers and all neighbouring villages, ADC said. However, operation has been hampered as the water was flowing above the danger level. Strong water current has also piled up huge debris along the bank of the river, and could be removed only with the help of excavator, Dr. Tinojongshi said.
ADC therefore, urged DC Phek to provide necessary equipments to remove the debris immediately as the bodies might have been trapped inside the debris. Dr. Tinojongshi further requested state government to sanction immediate relief to the affected families and to the search and rescue team, who have been putting more effort to retrieve the bodies.
Meanwhile, Cyclonic storm “Mora” accompanied by heavy showers has caused severe damage in Meluri and Mokokchung resulting in loss of lives, said commissioner & secretary to government of Nagaland, NSDMA, home department, Khrienuo Metha in a press release.
As per report received from District Disaster Management Authorities (DDMAs), Metha said on May 30 at around 12:30 to 1 a.m. a sudden flash flood caused by heavy rain washed away paddy fields of Meluri village and Jessami village (Manipur). Four persons were reported missing and one injured, Metha said. Two bridges in Phonkuri village under Meluri sub- division has also been washed away. She said search and rescue operation was underway.
Heavy wind also damaged public utility services in Mokokchung district. She said report on any casualties and damages to properties were awaited.
