North Lakhimpur (Assam), Jun 16 (PTI): One person has been arrested and six others detained for allegedly disrobing a woman for constructing a temporary shed near a road in Assam’s Lakhimpur district, police said on Tuesday.
According to Lakhimpur Senior Superintendent of Police Gunendra Deka, the incident took place at Konanadi Tiniali in Chauldhowa on Monday.
“A couple had opened a small roadside shop and were living there. They had recently erected a bamboo-tin shed behind the shop. On this, some people objected and alleged that they had encroached government land,” Deka told reporters.
He said a group of people belonging to the Mising community reached the spot and got into a verbal altercation with the couple.
“Suddenly, some people thrashed the woman, tore apart her shirt and left her in her innerwear. Many passersby crossed at that moment, but sadly, nobody tried to stop it. Everything happened in front of her husband, who stood helpless,” the SSP said.
A purported video of the incident has surfaced on social media, though its authenticity could not be independently verified by PTI.
“We have taken note of the incident and initiated an investigation. We have arrested one person and detained another six, including women, for questioning. Further investigation is underway,” Deka said.
