A non-Naga youth was held here on Wednesday on the charge of raping a minor girl. According to reports, 20-year-old Rahul Sen (as per ILP), son of Subrata Sen of Namrup Bengal Gaon in Assam’s Dibrugarh district, allegedly raped a 13-year-old girl. He was working as an assistant at a watch repair shop at Mon Town Bazaar Line.
It was also reported that the victim was allegedly raped twice earlier by the same person and was threatened of dire consequences if she disclosed the matter to anyone.
The incident came to light only her elder sister grew suspicious and enquired as the victim complained of abdominal pain and was unable to sit or walk properly.
Sources said when family members of the victim were on their way to police station to hand over the accused, a mob took Rahul into their custody, paraded him naked and kept him near the private bus station. Subsequently, a huge crowd gathered and began to manhandle the accused.
A police team and district administration officials soon reached the spot and managed to take away the accused from the mob after a brief tussle.
In the process, some policemen sustained minor injuries, police sources said.
A case has been registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
Meanwhile, a press release note Yuching Students’ Union (YSU) president Ponwang and assistant general secretary Sheihlong strongly condemned the incident. YSU stated that such monsters in human disguise have no place in the society.
YSU appealed to every civil society organisations and NGOs to condemn such inhuman acts.
It further appealed to the law enforcing agency/department concerned to award the accused a befitting punishment, as laid down in the constitution.
