10 govt Bills passed during 28-day Mizoram assembly session

A total of 10 government Bills, including one that sought to ban polygamy and increase women’s rights, were passed during the 28-day Budget session of the Mizoram Legislative Assembly.
The Budget session was adjourned sine die late on Monday.
Speaker Lalbiakzama, while announcing the sine die adjournment, gave a brief report on the proceedings of the session, which began on February 17.
During the session, the assembly passed the state’s annual Budget for the financial year 2026-27 amounting to Rs 17,469.91 crore and supplementary demands for grants for the fiscal 2025-26 amounting to Rs 3,724.25 crore.
The assembly also unanimously passed 10 government Bills, including ‘The Mizo Marriage and Inheritance of Property (Amendment) Bill, 2026,’ which sought to ban polygamy and increase women’s property rights, ‘The Mizoram (Prevention of Public Land Encroachment) Bill, 2026,’ and ‘The Mizoram State University (Amendment) Bill, 2026’, which sought to shift the base of the proposed state university from Aizawl to Lunglei.
According to the Speaker, the assembly received 1,248 starred questions and 396 unstarred questions for the session.
Of the 1,248 starred questions, 1,231 were admitted while 27 questions were rejected, seven withdrawn by members and 300 placed in the business list, he said.
Among the unstarred questions, 376 were admitted, 17 rejected and three withdrawn by members.
The assembly also adopted a resolution seeking inclusion of Mizo language in the Eighth Schedule of Constitution.
Lalbiakzama lauded the members for maintaining a friendly environment and decorum in the House.
