State Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) Friday launched 100-day campaign on sustainability of
Open Defecation Free (ODF) gains and achieving million soak pits”.
A press release by PHED stated that the campaign was launched and toolkits on ODF plus components was released by PHED secretary, Kesonyu Yhome at the Conference Hall, PHED Kohima.
In a brief speech, Yhome encouraged all field officers to gear up and put in all efforts so as to cover all gram panchayats within the 100 days campaign.
He said the campaign was to ensure that ODF status was sustained and that there were improved behaviours around waste management.
Yhome spoke on the reinforcing the grey water management so as to ensure that people in the rural areas continue to realize sustainable health and hygiene benefits.
Chairperson of the programme, chief engineer, sanitation and WSSO PHED, Er. Thsathrichem Sangtam, in his opening remark, emphasised on the rollout of action plan that would be circulated for implementation during the 100 days campaign.
The closing remark was delivered by chief engineer and HoD, PHED, Er. Repangyangba Longkumer.
PHED informed that the 100 days campaign was focused to re-energize efforts at local level and mobilize people for collective action on achieving sustainability of ODF outcomes and achieve construction of a million soak pits for management of grey water in rural areas across the country.
The campaign also focuses on district level orientation of gram panchayats and to mobilize them to initiate action in their respective villages and on the village community to pass resolution to maintain ODF sustainability.
The department informed that retrofitting of toilets through community mobilization and ensuring all new emerging households has access to toilets are some of the key activities that are to be undertaken to achieve the intended objective of the campaign.
