Eleutheros Christian Society, in collaboration with Kissan Network and North East Initiative Development Agency (NEIDA), exported more than 10 truckloads (100 tons) of ginger this month and plans to export another 20 truckloads by April 2019. Since 2017, the society, with support from Kissan Network and NEIDA, has been marketing ginger to Delhi and Mumbai. The mutual self-interest of providing the best possible price to the farmers and agreement on a profit sharing model has been the driving force that both group shares.
Ginger as a crop is suitable in most regions of Nagaland and needs to be seen as a profitable intercrop.
Under the MOVCD project, the horticulture department has supported 500 farmers under ECS and continues to help in organic certification and have formed the farmers’ cooperative societies.
