DIMAPUR: The Bharatiya Janata Mahila Morcha (BJMM) Nagaland and Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) Nagaland jointly commemorated the 125th Birth Anniversary of Dr. Syama Prasad Mukherjee at the Rotary Club, Midland, Dimapur on Friday.
The programme, chaired by Phomisonla Chang, general secretary BJMM Nagaland, began with an invocation prayer by Emi Lotha, vice president BJMM Nagaland.
The welcome address was delivered by Rajat Ghosh, general secretary BJYM Nagaland.
Highlighting the significance of the occasion, Likao Odyuo, general secretary BJYM Nagaland, presented an overview of Dr. Mukherjee’s life and legacy.
He elaborated on Mukherjee’s contributions as an educationist, nationalist leader, parliamentarian and founder of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh.
He also recalled his stand for national unity, opposition to the permit system in Jammu & Kashmir, and the circumstances surrounding his arrest and detention.
Odyuo recounted that Dr. Mukherjee was held in custody for 43 days by the then J&K government before his untimely demise in 1953, a subject that remains significant in India’s political history.
Students of Cornerstone College actively participated in the commemoration, engaging in the remembrance of the nationalist leader’s legacy.
Among the dignitaries present were Tsachola Rothrong, president BJMM Nagaland, and V. Khekato Awomi, president BJYM Nagaland, along with party functionaries, members of BJMM and BJYM, and invited guests.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Tsachola Rothrong, followed by the National Anthem and light refreshments.
