DIMAPUR: The 12th National Handloom Day was celebrated Friday at the Conference Hall, Hotel Saramati, Dimapur, bringing together weavers, artisans and key department officials to honour the rich heritage of the handloom sector and discuss strategies for its modern growth.
The formal session commenced with the arrival of chief guest Prasielie Pienyu, chairman, NHHDC Ltd., followed by the ceremonial lamp lighting (Deepa Prajvalan) and presentations.
Delivering the welcome address, Biswajit Das, assistant director (P) HoO, Weavers’ Service Centre, Toluvi, Dimapur, highlighted the importance of supporting local weavers and preserving traditional craftsmanship. In his keynote address, Er. Y. Lipongse Thongtsar, managing director, NHHDC Ltd., Dimapur, traced the history and vision of the handloom sector in the country and emphasised strategic growth of Nagaland’s handloom industry, quality production and ongoing efforts to support the artisan community.
The inaugural programme featured a vibrant cultural fashion show showcasing indigenous handloom attire, along with a folk song presentation by Chakhesang women. The session concluded with an address by the chief guest and a certificate distribution ceremony honouring local artisans.
A technical workshop cum seminar followed to equip local weavers with practical industry skills. Resource persons spoke on key topics including technology upgradation of weaving, designing and dyeing, development of handloom products according to market needs, and marketing promotion of handloom products.
