DIMAPUR, SEP (NPN): The Luke Sasong Sporting Association (LSSA) has announced that the 14th edition of the Luke Sasong Memorial Volleyball Tournament (All Nagaland Open) will be held from September 16 to 18 at the Multi-purpose Sports Complex, Mokokchung.
Organized biennially under the aegis of the Mangmetong Students’ Union, the tournament continues to honour the legacy of Luke Sasong, a distinguished son of Mangmetong village remembered as an educationist, pioneering Naga student leader, freedom fighter during the British era and devoted Christian leader. Born on September 9, 1913, Sasong passed away at the young age of 27, yet his contributions as president of the Ao Students’ Conference in 1938 and his leadership from 1932 to 1935 remain a symbol of scholarship, courage, patriotism and Christian service.
The memorial volleyball trophy was instituted to uphold the values of sportsmanship, youth development and community unity that Luke Sasong embodied. With MH-10 Kohima emerging as champions in the last two editions (2022 and 2024), the competition this year is expected to be even fiercer as new title contenders challenge the defending champions aiming for a third consecutive victory. It carries a total cash prize of Rs. 1.85 lakh, with the champions receiving Rs. 80,000 and the runners-up Rs. 50,000. Teams finishing in third and fourth places will be awarded Rs. 25,000 and Rs. 15,000 respectively. Individual awards of Rs. 5,000 each will be presented to the Best Setter, Best Spiker and Player of the Tournament. The tournament is open to all teams from Nagaland, provided the players are Nagas of Nagaland.
