CorrespondentIMPHAL, Jul 28

In its ongoing operations to disarm members of the two warring communities, Manipur police on Monday claimed recovery of 155 weapons of different types, 1652 ammunition and explosives along with warlike stores during coordinated simultaneous operations across violent-affected five hill districts.
This major recovery came barely three days after they recovered 90 different types of arms and 728 rounds of live ammunition in simultaneous operations across the five valley districts on July 26.
Monday’s major recovery was made in violent affected Churachandpur, Pherzawl, Kangpokpi, Chandel and Tengnoupal districts. The major recovery was made during coordinated operations launched simultaneously at multiple sites in the interior and suspected areas of the five hill districts acting on specific intelligence inputs, the office of the Director General of Police (DGP) Manipur said in a release.
The Manipur police launched the operations along with the Assam Rifles, Army and CAPFs (Central Armed Police Forces), it said. The recovered 155 weapons were eight AK Series guns, two Insas rifles, one each of SLR, sniper, M4 rifle, .22 rifle, Gren LR, Single Barrel Bolt Action rifle and shotgun, two 303 rifles, four carbines, 14 numbers of 12 Bore guns, eight 9mm pistols, five Single Barrel rifles, five SBBL, five Bolt Action rifles, 14 pistols (country made), four lathodes, 21 single bore guns, three muzzle loaded rifles, 31 pumpi, eight double barrel guns, and 13 single barrel guns.
A total of 39 IEDs, 13 hand-grenades, 1,600 assorted ammunition, four binoculars, 15 communication sets and one telescope were also seized during the operations, the release added. Monday’s recovery is the fifth instance of major seizure of arms and ammunition in the ongoing operations to recover arms looted from the state police armouries and illegal arms in the possessions of the miscreants within one and a half months.
The security forces have launched massive operations across the violent affected districts in both the valley and hills after the amnesty for the surrender of arms set by the state administration under President’s Rule ended on March 6 last.
Governor Ajay Kumar Balla set the amnesty on February 20, a week after the Centre imposed PR in the state on February 13. During the amnesty period, a total of 1,044 arms and 14,779 rounds of assorted ammunition were surrendered to security forces.
Since then, the police along with the Assam Rifles, Army and other Central security forces have been conducting operations to recover illegal arms and those looted from the state police armouries during the initial days of the outbreak of the violent ethnic conflict.
Recently, on July 26 last, the police displayed 90 arms and around 728 different types of ammunition which they claimed recovered during simultaneous intelligence based search operations across the five valley districts – Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Bishnupur, and Kakching.
Earlier, on July 15, the police claimed recovery of a total of 86 arms and around 974 rounds of ammunition during joint operations across the five above said valley districts
The security forces in another joint operation on July 4 last also recovered 203 arms, mostly sophisticated and around 160 different types of ammunition from four hill districts — Tengnoupal, Kangpokpi, Chandel, and Churachandpur.
On June 14, a total of 328 arms and around 9,300 different types of ammunition were recovered from five valley districts.
“These continued intelligence-led operations in the hill districts represented a major accomplishment for the state police, Assam Rifle, Army and other security forces in their continued mission to restore peace, uphold public order and safeguard the lives and property of citizens,” the DGP office said.
The state police also reaffirmed its commitment to fostering a peaceful and secure Manipur and urged the public to cooperate with the security forces and to promptly report any suspicious activity or information related to illegal arms to the nearest police station or the central control room.
“Senior police officials remain in close coordination with all security stakeholders to ensure that such operations continue in a sustained and focused manner, aimed at restoring normalcy, maintaining public order, and safeguarding the fives and property of all citizens, it added.
