Between January 20 and July 22, 2025, a total of 1,703 Indian nationals—1,562 men and 141 women—were deported from the United States, according to Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh. Most deportees hailed from Punjab, Haryana, Gujarat, and Uttar Pradesh. Deportations occurred via military and chartered flights operated by US agencies, as well as commercial flights from Panama and the US.
The Indian government has formally raised concerns with US authorities regarding the treatment of deportees, particularly the use of shackles on women and children, and issues related to cultural sensitivities like turbans and dietary needs.
In response to student visa delays, the MEA acknowledged receiving multiple complaints about F, M, and J category visas and has engaged with the US Embassy and Department of State.
The US side attributed delays to heightened security protocols but confirmed that visa appointments have resumed, with priority being given to physician categories and additional slots expected before the academic year begins. The Indian government continues to monitor the welfare of students and migrants through its missions, the MADAD portal, and emergency support via the Indian Community Welfare Fund.
