Angami Youth Organization (AYO) has expressed deep concern over the February 13, 2026 assault on leaders of Chakhroma Public Organisation (CPO) by Maova Kuki villagers and reminded that the 1995 quit notice issued to Kukis in Angami jurisdiction was only kept in abeyance and could be revived anytime if necessary.
In a statement, AYO recalled that in 1995 two innocent Angami brothers were allegedly robbed and killed by Kukis from Tapho village in Manipur, following which AYO issued a quit notice to all Kukis residing in Angami areas. After appeals from Kuki leaders, CPO intervened and sought revocation of the notice, it added.
On July 31, 1995, AYO said Kuki leaders made a declaration at Medziphema pledging to respect decisions of the landowners (CPO) in political and social matters, abide by Angami Naga customary law in disputes, and accept that landowners could change village names if required.
In view of this pledge, AYO said it kept the quit notice in abeyance.
AYO described February 13 incident as a shocking display of hostility and aggression by Maova Kukis against Chakhroma Angami leaders, stating that it has caused grave concern.
It cautioned that the 1995 quit notice “can be restored/revived at any time” and urged Maova Village Council to comply fully with the seven-day ultimatum issued by the Chakhroma Youth Organization (CYO) on February 16, to avoid any adverse consequences.
AYO added that it was closely monitoring developments in the Chakhroma area.
