1st Test: India shine with Bumrah’s 5-wkt haul

KOLKATA, NOV 14 (IANS)

India ended Day One of the first Test against South Africa at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, firmly in control after Jasprit Bumrah’s incisive five-wicket haul dismantled the visitors for a modest 159. By stumps, India had reached 37/1 in 20 overs, trailing by 122 runs, with KL Rahul (13 not out) and Washington Sundar (6 not out) steadying the innings following the early dismissal of opener Yashasvi Jaiswal.
South Africa, having elected to bat first, began brightly with Ryan Rickelton and Aiden Markram compiling a fluent 57-run opening stand—their first fifty partnership in India after 17 innings. Rickelton looked assured, punishing Mohammed Siraj with boundaries, while Markram overcame a slow start to play attractive strokes, including a six off Axar Patel. However, Bumrah’s brilliance turned the tide. He bowled Rickelton with a length delivery that beat the outside edge, before dismissing Markram with a rising ball that was caught by Rishabh Pant.
Kuldeep Yadav then trapped captain Temba Bavuma cheaply, and Dhruv Jurel’s sharp catch reduced South Africa to 71/3. Wiaan Mulder and Tony de Zorzi resisted briefly until lunch, but India’s bowlers resumed with relentless accuracy. Kuldeep trapped Mulder lbw attempting a reverse sweep, while Bumrah’s inswinger accounted for de Zorzi. Siraj joined the attack with reverse swing, removing Kyle Verreynne lbw and bowling Marco Jansen for a duck in the same over. Axar Patel added to the collapse by trapping Corbin Bosch before tea.
The highlight of the day came in the post-tea session when Bumrah, cheered on by 35,000 spectators, produced a fiery burst. He bowled Simon Harmer with a jagging delivery and then unleashed a searing yorker to dismiss Keshav Maharaj lbw, completing his five-wicket haul with figures of 5-27 in 14 overs. South Africa’s innings folded for 159, losing all ten wickets for just 102 runs after their promising start. Stubbs remained unbeaten on 15, watching the carnage unfold.
India’s reply began cautiously. Jaiswal took 15 balls to get off the mark with a boundary off Jansen and added two more fours before chopping onto his stumps for 12. Rahul adopted a watchful approach, scoring just one run off his first 14 balls before opening up with a drive off Mulder. Washington Sundar, promoted to number three, survived a testing spell and grew in confidence as the session progressed. South Africa’s seamers Jansen, Mulder, and Bosch maintained discipline, while spinners Maharaj and Harmer extracted turn, but Rahul and Sundar held firm.
Bad light curtailed play at 4:35 pm, ending a day dominated by Bumrah’s brilliance. His spell not only rattled South Africa but also delighted the Kolkata crowd, ensuring India held the upper hand heading into Day Two. With Rahul and Sundar set at the crease and India trailing by 122 runs, the hosts will look to build a substantial first-innings lead to press home their advantage.
Brief scores:
South Africa 159 all out in 55 overs (Aiden Markram 31, Ryan Rickelton 23; Jasprit Bumrah 5-27, Kuldeep Yadav 2-36) lead India 37/1 in 20 overs (KL Rahul 13 not out, Yashasvi Jaiswal 12; Marco Jansen 1-11) by 122 runs
