The first Unisex Marathon Race (12 kms walk and run) to spread awareness on the use of tobacco was conducted from Botsa to Gariphema on May 31 under the theme, “Commit to quit. Yes to life. No to tobacco! Pledge to quit it”.
The event was organized by Gariphema Village Student’s Union (GVSU) as part of the observation of “World No Tobacco Day” and 9th anniversary of the declaration of Gariphema as “Tobacco Free Village.” It was sponsored by Gariphema Village Council, NCRC, Department of Health & Family Welfare, Nagaland.
Wede T. Mero (42 min, 38 sec) from Chizami village under Phek district bagged the first position.
Taliyanger Ozukum (46 min, 58 sec) from Mokokchung district, Lhouvisalie Mere (48 min, 30 sec) from Kohima village and Atseibou Rüpreo (1 hr, 6 min) from Tsiemekhuma village of Kohima district stood 2nd, 3rd and 4th positions respectively.
30 youth from different parts of the state joined the Marathon Race.
