DIMAPUR: Kohima Police apprehended two cadres of the NSCN/GPRN K (Michael) faction allegedly involved in an extortion racket targeting truck drivers along National Highway 29 near New SKV Petrol Pump, Merhülietsa Colony, on Saturday.
According to PRO of Kohima police, the arrested individuals were identified as: Beilie Rupreo (37), ‘SS Leacy’ NSCN/GPRN K (Michael), permanent resident of Chiechama Village, presently residing at Sovima Village, Chümoukedima and Kevingulie Metha (39), ‘SS Khapur’ NSCN/GPRN K (Michael), permanent resident of Nachama Village, presently residing at High School Colony, Kohima.
Police said that at around 11:40 a.m., credible information was received about unidentified individuals extorting money from truck drivers. Acting swiftly, a team was dispatched to the location where suspicious persons were observed. After discreet surveillance confirmed their activities, the suspects were apprehended.
During personal search, several extortion slips bearing the name of the GPRN (Finance Committee) were recovered from their possession.
Following the arrests, a case was registered at South Police Station, Kohima, and investigation is underway. Police said the accused are being subjected to sustained interrogation to uncover the larger extortion network, including operatives, financiers and possible linkages to activities in other districts.
Meanwhile, Kohima Police urged citizens, transporters, traders and business establishments to report incidents of extortion or unlawful demands to the nearest police station, assuring strict confidentiality of informants and complainants.
