20 lakh appear for NEET UG re-exam amid tight security

NEW DELHI, JUN 21 (PTI): Over 20 lakh medical aspirants appeared for the NEET (UG) re-examination on Sunday after the original test was cancelled following a paper leak, which sparked controversy and protests. The National Testing Agency (NTA) said the exam was conducted across 5,440 centres in India and 14 abroad, in 13 languages, with support from about seven lakh personnel under a whole-of-government approach.
NTA DG Abhishek Singh said extensive security measures, including biometric checks, CCTV surveillance and frisking, ensured transparency, though a few impersonation and malpractice cases were reported. Special arrangements were made for candidates with disabilities and medical conditions.
The exam saw logistical challenges, including weather disruptions and travel issues, though authorities arranged transport and facilities in several states. Some aspirants faced delays and entry issues. Officials said the re-test was completed in 37 days with coordinated efforts from multiple ministries and agencies.
