In the wake of the tragic Air India Flight AI171 crash, the Gujarat Health Department announced today that DNA matches have been confirmed for 220 victims, and their relatives have been contacted. As of 11:45 a.m. on June 20, 202 bodies have been formally handed over to their grieving families.
The repatriation efforts include 151 Indian nationals, 34 British citizens, seven Portuguese nationals, one Canadian, and nine non-passengers, believed to be ground staff or airport personnel. Of these, 15 sets of remains were transported by air, while the majority, 187, were sent by road in ambulances to their respective destinations.
Health Minister Rushikesh Patel shared this update on social media, assuring the public that the remaining mortal remains will be handed over soon, following the necessary identification and formalities.
