A devastating fire broke out at Officer’s Hill Colony here on Wednesday afternoon, reducing three residential houses to ashes and displacing at least seven families. The incident, suspected to have originated from a faulty gas connection, occurred around 12 noon in Sector D of the colony, near Paramedical Colony.
Speaking to Nagaland Post, colony council chairman Khrielakuo Sekhose said the fire spread rapidly, completely consuming the houses before it could be brought under control. While no casualties were reported, residents lost all their belongings in the blaze.
The Fire Station South received the emergency call at approximately 12:05 pm and immediately dispatched fire tenders to the site. Firefighters, along with local residents, worked together to contain the flames and prevent further destruction.
The prompt response of the Fire & Emergency Services was crucial in stopping the fire from spreading to adjacent structures, Sekhose stated. He mentioned that immediate relief measures were initiated swiftly, with assistance provided by the colony council and ward councillor Kevinei Sekhose.
Authorities are currently assessing the full extent of the damage, and efforts are underway to support the affected families. Incidents of fire outbreaks in Kohima have been a recurring concern, often linked to electrical faults or cooking gas leaks.
Fire Department officials have once again urged residents to take necessary precautions, including regular maintenance of gas connections and electrical wiring, to prevent such mishaps.
