DIMAPUR, AUG 4 (NPN): The 36th August Gold Cup Trophy, organised by the Sey-Ong Club Tobu, commenced on Tuesday at Tobu Headquarters under Mon district with former minister and vice president of COB NPF Nagaland, L. Shiakpong Konyak, gracing the occasion as chief guest.
In his address, Shiakpong expressed gratitude to the Sey-Ong Club Tobu for consistently providing a platform for youth to showcase their sporting talents and build careers in sports over the past 36 years. He underscored the role of sports in fostering discipline, teamwork and unity among young people, urging players to seize the opportunities offered by the tournament to advance their careers. He also appealed to community leaders to extend cooperation and support to the club in promoting youth through sports.
Welcoming the gathering, chairman of Sey-Ong Club Tobu, K. T. Lehwang Konyak, acknowledged the Nagaland Football Association (NFA) for approving the tournament under its aegis and for providing technical guidance. He also expressed gratitude to advisor for Youth Resources and Sports, Government of Nagaland, S. Keoshu Yimchunger, for his assistance in providing sports equipment and to MLA Naiba Konyak and MLA & chairman SDPDB Tobu, Nyamnyei Konyak, for their timely support to the club.
The opening ceremony featured a special performance by the Choosen 3 band, followed by the formal declaration of the tournament with the chief guest kicking the opening ball. The event was attended by administrative officers, government officials, dignitaries and leaders from the Tobu area, marking a spirited beginning to the prestigious football tournament.
