A total of 371 students from Nagaland, who were stranded at Kaziranga University in Jorhat following Saturday night’s unrest, were safely evacuated and brought to Dimapur in the early hours of Sunday.
Officials informed that while one student was picked up directly by parents in Jorhat, the remaining 370 reached Circuit House, Dimapur, around 4:30 a.m. before dispersing to their respective districts.
The evacuation was carried out through coordination between the Assam and Nagaland administrations. Students were escorted by Border Magistrate Tsurangkong and state police personnel and later received half way by officials– including SDO (C), EAC, Dobashi, ADCP Chümoukedima, ACP East PS, IRB, and STF personnel.
Eight buses were arranged for their transportation, while police convoys from Dimapur and Mokokchung ensured safe passage throughout the journey.
The unrest at Kaziranga University was triggered after a Naga student allegedly made remarks about late Assamese singer Zubeen Garg. A video clip of the incident went viral on social media, sparking tensions as students and outsiders gathered near the hostel premises on Saturday night. University authorities and security forces intervened promptly and shifted the concerned student to a safe location.
Authorities assured that all necessary measures were taken to safeguard the welfare of the students during the evacuation.
