A low intensity earthquake jolted Nagaland, other North Eastern states and parts of Bangladesh in the early hours of Friday. The tremor was mainly felt in Dimapur.
However, there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage to property. “The quake, measuring 4.9 on the Richter Scale, occurred at 3.45 a.m. and had its epicentre in Assam’s Karimganj district bordering Bangladesh,” a seismologist of the central seismological centre in Meghalaya’s Upper Shillong, said. According to officials, the tremor reportedly lasted for over 8 seconds.
North Eastern states – Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Tripura, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur – are considered by seismologists as the sixth major earthquake-prone belt in the world.
