Four tribal bodies—Chakhesang Public Organisation (CPO), Sümi Hoho (SH), Pochury Hoho (PH) and United Sangtam Likhüm Pumji (USLP)—have demanded immediate repair of the damaged NH-29 stretch from Kohima to Chakhabama.
In a joint representation addressed to the deputy commissioner (DC) Kohima, CPO president TZ Keyho, SH president Dr. Vihuto Asumi, PH president Chonpa Jurry and USLP president K.Aliba Sangtam highlighted about the deplorable condition of National Highway-29, specifically the stretch from Kohima to Chakhabama.
The signatories said that the vital road, which serves as a lifeline connecting the districts of Phek, Zunheboto, Kiphire, and surrounding areas, has become “virtually impassable.”
They said that the situation arose due to the continued negligence of the construction companies responsible for its maintenance, even though the project was still within its maintenance period.
The four tribal bodies asserted that failure to repair and maintain the road stretch not only posed a serious threat to the safety of commuters, but also disrupted emergency services, affected local businesses, and severely hampered the economic well-being of the region. “The current condition of the road warrants immediate intervention,” they said.
Therefore, the four apex tribal bodies have urged DC Kohima to direct the responsible construction companies to undertake immediate repair and restoration work on the NH-29 stretch.
