The department of Mathematics, St. Joseph’s College (Autonomous), Jakhama, in collaboration with the commission for education, Diocese of Kohima (CEDOK), successfully organized the 4th All Nagaland State Level Mathematics Quiz Competition on November 8, 2025 under the theme “Equations of Excellence: Igniting Minds, Shaping Future.”
The event brought together 21 schools from various districts of Nagaland, including Kohima, Dimapur, Chümoukedima, Phek, and Mokokchung. A total of 42 students participated in the competition, showcasing remarkable enthusiasm, teamwork, and mathematical aptitude.
Teisovi Gerard Meyase, assistant professor & COE, Kohima Science College Jotsoma, who attended the event as the guest speaker, stated that mathematics is not merely about numbers, symbols, and formulas, but much more than that: it is a way of seeing the world. The pattern of leaves, the rhythm of music, the symmetry of snowflakes, and the orbit of the planets are all written in the language of mathematics.
He also quoted Galileo, saying that “Mathematics is the language in which God has written the universe.” Referring to the theme “Equations of Excellence”, he remarked that, just like in mathematics, success in life depends on finding balance in relationships.
He then shared an inspiring formula for excellence:Excellence = (Curiosity × Consistency) + Integrity – Fear.
He also left a message for the department of Mathematics, noting that such initiatives truly matter, and that every time they conduct this competition, they are planting seeds of knowledge and inspiration in young minds. He concluded his speech with an original reflection:
“When life gives you theorems, find your constants. When things don’t add up, check your assumptions. And finally, when you reach your conclusion, solve it with joy. Let the equations you write today not only balance numbers, but also balance wisdom with wonder, ambition with humility, and competition with friendship.”
After several rounds of rigorous competition, Wapongchiba Pongen and Supongnokden Imsong from Queen Mary Higher Second School, Mokokchung emerged as the champion, securing the first position and a cash prize of ₹25,000.
Sarahya Ghosh and Felix P.Anand from Holy Cross Higher Secondary School, Dimapur claimed the second position and was awarded ₹20,000, while Kvulo Bukh and.Deo Dukru from Christ King Higher Secondary School Kohima, Sentinato Tsiidir and Rungkung Sabina Chothe from Little Flower Higher Secondary School, Kohima & Khangembam Khrishnananda Singh and Jonathan Lemtur from Pilgrim Higher Secondary School, Dimapur received consolation prizes of ₹3,000 each for their commendable performances. The event concluded with the prize distribution and a photo session.
