St. Joseph University (SJU) officially kicked off the 4th edition of the St. Joseph University Trophy on Tuesday with a ceremony held at the university campus. The four-day tournament, scheduled from October 15 to 18, brings together 24 teams from colleges and universities across Nagaland to compete in a range of sporting events.
The inaugural programme was hosted by Assistant Professor, Department of Management, Dr. Sohile Tep. The ceremony began with the hoisting of the flag and the National Anthem led by the SJU Music Club, followed by an invocation prayer by Rev. Fr. Dr. Sunny Joseph, Professor, Department of Education.
Prof. Charles Monthung Ezung, Dean of Students’ Affairs, delivered the welcome address, extending warm greetings to dignitaries and participating institutions. The event was graced by Lipokmar Tzudir, Director of the Nagaland Conservatory of Music, who attended as the special guest.
In his keynote speech, Tzudir drew a compelling parallel between music and sports, emphasizing shared values of discipline, perseverance, and dedication. He encouraged students to pursue excellence not only in sports but also in academics and personal growth, advocating for a more just and humane society. He also acknowledged the pivotal role of Catholic educational institutions in shaping education across Nagaland and Southeast Asia.
A highlight of the ceremony was a Wooden Dumbbells Display by students of the Physical Education Department, showcasing strength and coordination. Participating institutions were felicitated in a gesture of camaraderie and mutual respect.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Sarikokba, Assistant Professor, Department of Chemistry, followed by the University Anthem performed by the SJU Music Club.
The event culminated in the ceremonial torch lighting and oath-taking led by Thejasetuo, officially marking the commencement of the 2025 SJU Trophy.
