The 5th edition of September Melange got underway at Fazl Ali College (FAC) Mokokchung after it was declared open by principal, Dr. I. Wati Imchen on September 4.
Special guest of the opening ceremony was ADC Mokokchung, Chumlamo Humtsoe, who spoke on how creativity exercises the imagination and helped in practical judgment and seeking solutions.
On the opening day, debate, poetry, and dance competitions were conducted. The debate competition was held on the topic “Oppositionless Government in Nagaland is Mockery,” where ten participants spoke for and against the motion.
Tiarenla, leader of the opposition team, said in her concluding remark that an oppositionless government in Nagaland was needed in order to avoid conflict among the diverse tribes, cultures, and traditions. She pointed out that village councils can be a medium through which issues can be voiced for the people. She also commented that Nagaland state has many social issues and problems, and therefore, to remove rivalries and promote brotherhood and sisterhood, an oppositionless government was essential.
Speaking for the motion, Asensor Jamir, the leader of the team, said in his concluding remark termed the oppositionless government in Nagaland as a failed experiment and should be done away since it was not working and pointless. He remarked that the present oppositionless government was more powerful than ever, but there was a lack of progress and change in the state, and the lack of action speaks volumes as to why an oppositionless government was a mockery of democracy.
