The Department of Fisheries & Aquatic Resources, Government of Nagaland in collaboration with Anglers Association Nagaland (AAN) organised the 5th Nagaland Hornbill Angling Festival at Government Fish Farm, Thizama on the December 4 and 5.
In junior category, the first place was bagged by Keneitoso, second position by Flauin, third by Hyucozu and fourth by Neitseizo. In senior category, Akum Imsong (9.130 Kg) clinched the first position, 2nd by Aseto (7.655Kg), 3rd – Lanu Aier (5.800 Kg), 4th by Tali Akum (5.075 Kg), 5th – Yentsao (4.795 Kg), 6th – Victor (4.780 Kg), 7th – Vungrhonthung (3.435Kg), 8th – Yilobemo (3.104Kg), 9th – Toshimanen (2.960 Kg), 10th – Neile Thuineo (2.810Kg), 11th – Tsungro Kithan (2.570 Kg), 12th – Angulie (2.490 Kg), 13th – Chumbemo Ngullie (2.335 Kg), 14th – Mar Longkumer – 1.995 Kg and 15th – Nongthang – 1.955 Kg.
The closing ceremony was graced by advisor of Agriculture, Mhathung Yanthan as the special guest. Speaking at the closing programme, Yanthan emphasized that the competition was a joyous celebration of the art of fishing and the spirit of sportsmanship that brings people together.
He expressed that this celebration is rooted in the love and excitement of fishing, which not only serves as a sport but also contributes to their mental well-being.
Yanthan further highlighted that fishing connects them with nature and asserted that fishers and anglers play a crucial role in conserving nature, flora, and fauna, thus maintaining the delicate balance of ecosystems. He pointed out that the competition sends a powerful message about conserving their natural resources, fostering a sense of sportsmanship, and encouraging unity and connection among people.
In his welcoming speech, director of Fisheries & AR Rongsennungba highlighted that the programme was orchestrated with an aim of advancing fisheries ecotourism and advocating for sports fisheries. With Nagaland’s abundant variety of fish, he expressed hope that organizing such events would inspire people to actively preserve the region’s diverse aquatic flora and fauna. He also underscored the tremendous potential for promoting responsible fishing activities such as angling sports, which could in turn contribute to entrepreneurial development, employment opportunities, and the advancement of fishery ecotourism.
Additional director, Fisheries & AR Lotimenba presented the introductions and felicitation. President All India Game Fishing Association (AIGFA) Santosh R. Kolwankar and chairman EM, Anglers Association Nagaland Ricky Ozukum greeted the ceremony.
Earlier, Shalom Bible Seminary associate pastor Kevidzenyü Mere blessed the programme with invocation. Director, Fisheries & AR Rongsennungba presented the awards.
