60 drug licences cancelled for non-compliance

The Drugs Control Administration under the Health & Family Welfare (H&FW) Department has so far cancelled more than 60 drug licences for non-compliance and violation of various statutory requirements.

Noting that it was already in the public domain and knowledge on the efforts of the Drugs Control Authority towards streamlining of irregularities and deficiencies in the both the retail and wholesale sectors, the state drugs controller in a statement pointed out that it was a massive exercise requiring the department to operate within the ambit and procedures of law, and hence would require time to achieve the corrective and preventive action.

The state drugs controller however assured that the Drugs Control Administration was fully committed to carry out this challenging task in the interest of public service, to ensure that better and quality health services were provided to the general public. Towards this end, he sought the cooperation and support from all sections of the society for successful implementation of this unprecedented campaign.

Reacting to a news item that appeared in several local dailies on March 4, 2025 of East Dimapur Town Council issuing directive for closure of pharmacies operating without valid pharmacist degree within its jurisdiction before March 31, he said the administration appreciated the concerns and pragmatism shown towards the safety and improvement of health services of the public.

However, he suggested exercising restraint from issuing such directives, as this would amount to infringement into the powers and functions of Drugs Control Administration, inviting far reaching legal ramification as it was the only competent authority duly appointed, empowered and technically qualified under the Central Statute Drugs & Cosmetics Act, 1940 and rules made there under to regulate the manufacturing, sales and distribution of drugs.
