KOHIMA, AUG 11 (NPN): The Inter-Department Badminton Club (IDBC) in collaboration with the Kohima District Administration, has announced that the 6th Kohima Inter-Department Badminton Tournament 2026 will be held on September 11 and 12 at the NLA Stadium, Kohima. The announcement was made during a press briefing at the DC Office, Kohima, where organisers invited badminton enthusiasts and players from various government departments, banks and institutions to participate in the annual event.
The tournament will feature four categories: Men’s Doubles, Women’s Doubles, Mixed Doubles and Doubles for participants aged 50 and above, including legislators, ex-legislators and retirees. The entry fee has been fixed at Rs. 3,000 per team, with September 7 set as the last date for submission of forms. The organisers confirmed that the tournament will carry a total prize pool of Rs. 1 lakh, making it one of the departmental badminton tournaments in Nagaland with a significant prize purse.
Speaking at the briefing, IDBC president Er. Sabou Yashu said the club has been organising the tournament annually since 2020 and expressed gratitude to the Kohima District Administration for collaborating in this year’s edition. He encouraged badminton enthusiasts from various departments to come forward and participate actively.
Deputy Commissioner Kohima, Henok Buchem noted that the District Administration decided to collaborate with the club following its request. He highlighted the importance of the tournament in promoting physical fitness, teamwork, camaraderie and healthy competition among government employees. Buchem also appreciated the IDBC for its continued efforts to promote badminton and sportsmanship.
IDBC general secretary Kekhriesetuo Ziephrü explained that the tournament was initiated in 2020 with the objective of providing government employees a platform to take a break from routine office responsibilities and come together through sports. He said the event offers employees an opportunity to strengthen friendships, build camaraderie and exchange constructive ideas beyond the workplace. Ziephrü recalled that the inaugural edition saw 102 participants, while subsequent editions recorded an average participation of 70 to 75 departments.
The organisers have invited employees from government departments, banks and other institutions to participate and contribute to the success of the event. Interested players have been urged to submit their forms by September 7, 2026.
