
One-day on campus awareness programme on “scientific pig feeding, management & bio-security of farm animal” was held at School of Agricultural Sciences and Rural Development (SASRD) Nagaland University, Medziphema campus on August 17, jointly organized by ICAR-National Research Centre on pig, Rani Guwahati and All India Coordinated Research Centre on pig Nagaland Centre.
Piggery Self Help Groups (SHGs), Medziphema ward-9, group leader, Anungla has spoken on behalf of the farmers.
In the programme, Dean NU-SASRD Prof. R.C.Gupta stressed on the economical feeding of pigs with minimum wastage as feeding accounts for 65-75%.
He maintained that every stage of the pig has its own different requirements, optimum feeding for maximum gain adding all the essential macro & micro minerals and feeding at the right time are some of the issues that are to be covered in the technical session, and the farmers must get good information to improve backyard pigs for self sustainability.
In the technical session guest speaker, principal scientist, ICAR-National Research Centre on pig, Rani Guwahati, Dr. Santanu Banik presented power point on the “Overview of piggery sector and Breeding strategies for optimum pig production”.
He also mentioned on selection of the breeding males based on the performance of growth rate, proper developments of male genital organs and other genetically recorded data are essential for a good breeding stock selection to maximized production.
Sr. Scientist, ICAR-National Research Centre on pig, Rani Guwahati, Dr. K. Barman also presented on scientific pig feeding, management & bio-security of farm animals.
Sr. Scientist, ICAR-National Research Centre on pig, Rani Guwahati, Dr. Girish Patil stressed on hygienic pork production and production of self- stable pork products, since the consumers of North East states of India particularly Nagaland prefers pork and pork product is high.
He also informed to retort processed shelf stable ready to eat pork product which is ideal and healthy for human.
Assistant professor & In-charge, ICAR-AICRP on Pig Nagaland Centre, Dr. M. Catherine Rutsa presented on vaccination against classical swine fever in pig and informed the farmers the availability of swine fever vaccine with the in-charge ICAR- All India Coordinated Research Project on Pig Dept. Of Livestock Production & Management, NU, SASRD, which could be utilized according to their need and the vaccine provided by the department of Vety & A.H, Nagaland.
Inaugural session was chaired by Dr. Nizamuddin, HoD of the department of livestock production & management, NU-SASRD.
