One-day workshop on trivalent oral polio vaccine (tOPV) to bivalent oral polio vaccine (bOPV) was conducted on March 15 for medical officers, vaccinators, cold chain handlers, DPMs and BPMs under Dimapur and Peren districts at the CMO conference hall Dimapur, to prepare them to switch from tOPV to bOPV.
Since the polio type 2 has been eradicated from the world, bOPV will totally replace tOPV throughout the world. This is called the ‘switch’.
In india, the national switch day will be held on April 26 when bOPV will replace tOPV.
Resource person WHO consultant, Dr. Nagen Sharma presented the Global Polio Scenario and Endgame Strategy, and also highlighted the National Switch Plan during the workshop.
The polio campaigns and immunization programme currently use tOPV which contains all 3 types of Polioviruses- type
1, 2 & 3.
