Along with the rest of the country, World Consumer Rights Day was observed in Medziphema, Wokha and Mokokchung on Tuesday.
Department of legal metrology and consumer protection, Dimapur observed the day with the theme, “antibiotics off the menu” at SASRD, Nagaland University Medziphema campus. The event was graced by ADC Medziphema, Sara S.Jamir as chief guest and senior medical officer CHC, Medizphema, Dr. Manyau Phom as resource person. Speaking on the occasion, Sara urged upon the students to give importance on the packaging of commodities, labels, price tags etc.
Stating that Nagas were ignorant on consumer rights, she cited an example where Nagas accept sweets/band aids instead of change from the shop keeper. In this regard, she urged the people to rise up and fight for the consumer rights.
Also speaking on the topic, the ADC said that antibiotics have been misused in many ways especially in reared animals where antibiotics injected to grow the animals faster for commercial uses.
Earlier, welcome address was delivered by Pro vice chancellor SASRD, NU, Pro.N.S.Jamir, followed by keynote address by assistant controller of legal metrology & consumer protection, Dimapur, Limatoshi Jamir.
WOKHA: Legal Metrology And Consumer Protection (LMCP) department and Wokha District Voluntary Consumer Association (WDVC) jointly observed World Consumer Rights Day at LTC hall, Wokha on Tuesday. The occasion was graced by Lotha Hoho chairman, Mhao Lotha as as the chief guest. In a press statement, WDVCA chairman, Mhonimo Lotha stated that the chief guest encouraged the gathering to be conscious of consumer rights and assured of cooperation to the movement.
MO PHC Englan, Dr. Mhajan Kikon, while speaking on the theme, “antibiotic off the menu” stressed on the various causes of antibiotic resistance, which has now become a global campaign.
Assistant controller LMCP, Shiloh Kath spoke on the history of consumer movement and Mhonimo spoke on the legal aspects of consumerism and consumer movement in the district. Convenor and secretary ACAUT, member from Team Metamorphosis, chairperson Lotha Eloe Hoho, lecturer and students from Mount Tiyi College, teachers and students from government higher secondary school Wokha participated in the function. Earlier, the programme chaired by inspector LMCP Wokha, Mharhoni Z Murry began with an invocation by pastor WTBC, Rev. Sulumo Ezung.
MOKOKCHUNG: In Mokokchung, the day was observed in four Higher Secondary Schools.
According to DIPR report, the schools have their own Consumers Forums, and the functions were sponsored by the Office of the Assistant Controller Legal Metrology & Consumer protection aiming at creating more awareness about consumers’ rights.
At Mayangnokcha Government Higher Secondary Schools, Principal, Arenla encouraged the participants to mobilize more action in creating awareness among consumers about their rights and show solidarity with consumer movement worldwide. Post Graduate Teacher, MGHSS, Sevolu Ringa, who spoke on the theme, called for joining hands in the mass consumers’ movement against use of antibiotics in food production and the risk it presents to human life.
