Tiger could have been tranquilized, says Forest deptt

Chief Wildlife Warden, Satya Prakash Tripathy, IFS said that the tiger shot at Medziphema on February 29 could have been tranquilized.
However, before Assam forest department officials could reach the spot with tranquilizer, the villagers had already shot the tiger, he added.
Speaking to Nagaland Post, Tripathy informed that the forest department had received the complete information of the tiger only on February 28 morning.
He lamented that the facilities such as tranquilizer was not available in the state due to “resource crunch” and was still under process.
Though the tiger was shot dead in self defense, he however pointed out that killing it was “serious matter since it is considered as the national animal of the country.
There were never any reports of tiger being spotted in the state, but this incident is being investigated by the Forest department Dimapur division under the chief wildlife warden, Tripathy said.
He also informed that a biologist would be assigned to ascertain the breed of the tiger. The post mortem was under process, after which a case under judicial magistrate would be registered, he informed.
